Shopify product photos: background, count, and video, explained
Getting Shopify product photos right is less about hitting a hard platform rule, the way Amazon enforces its white-background main image, and more about following conventions that make a store look consistent and trustworthy. This guide covers background and style conventions, how many images sellers typically use, and how Shopify's native video support works, so you can build a photo set that merchandises your product well. For exact pixel dimensions and file-size limits, see our separate guide to product photo size requirements — this page is about what's in the frame, not how big the file is.
Background and style: Shopify's conventions, not platform rules
Shopify doesn't mandate a background color or style the way Amazon requires a pure white background for its main image — there's no Shopify rule that checks or rejects an image for its background. What exists instead is strong seller convention: a neutral, consistent background (plain white or a soft, uniform color) across every photo in a product's set is widely recommended because it keeps the product, not the backdrop, as the focus, and it makes a product grid look cohesive rather than assembled from mismatched shoots. Many stores also use a secondary, contextual or lifestyle background for one or two images further down the set, once the primary white or neutral shots have established what the product actually looks like. Either approach works on Shopify; what matters more is that every product in your catalog follows the same pattern as its neighbors, not that you pick one specific color.
How many Shopify product photos to use
Shopify's own technical ceiling is generous enough that it isn't a real constraint: a single product can carry up to 250 images, videos, or 3D models. In practice, almost no seller uploads anywhere near that many, and more isn't automatically better — a bloated set can slow a page and bury the images that actually help a buyer decide. We cover the practical count sellers converge on, and how it compares across Amazon, Etsy, and TikTok Shop, in our guide to how many product photos you need, rather than re-deriving that number here.
Shopify's native video support
Shopify supports product video natively: you can upload a video file directly to a product's media gallery alongside its photos, no app or embed required. Shopify's own help documentation caps an uploaded product video at 60 seconds in length, 1GB in file size, up to 4K (4096 x 2160px) resolution, in MP4 or MOV format. If you want a video longer than that, Shopify's documentation points you to hosting it on YouTube or Vimeo and embedding it instead, which removes the 60-second and 1GB limits. For most product pages, a short video showing the product from a few angles or in use fits well within Shopify's native limit without needing an external host.
General merchandising best practices
- Zoom-friendly quality: Shopify's built-in zoom needs a reasonably high-resolution image to work well; a soft or low-resolution photo looks worse zoomed in than it does at thumbnail size.
- Consistent cropping and framing: keep the product at a similar scale and position across a set, and across variants of the same product, so switching between color or size options doesn't make the product visibly jump or shrink in frame.
- Same light, same angle, every product: shooting (or generating) every product in your catalog under similar lighting and from a similar primary angle is what actually makes a storefront look professional, more than any single photo being perfect on its own.
- Lead with your clearest shot: the first image in a product's set is what shows in collection grids and search results, so it should be the clearest, most representative one, with any styled or lifestyle shots placed later in the set.
Where ShopShot Studio fits
ShopShot Studio turns one phone photo into a set of studio-style photos, in a style you pick, for four categories: bags, clothing, home & ceramics, and skincare. Choosing one style for the whole set, like clean studio or studio float, is a straightforward way to keep the consistent background look Shopify sellers tend toward across every image in a listing. The Photos + Video and Launch Pack packages also add a short video, 5 or 10 seconds depending on the package, generated from the same product photo, which fits well within Shopify's native video upload limit. Every image is checked against your original photo before delivery, with one free redo if something doesn't match. Photos are delivered within 1 business day, starting at $15.

Questions
Does Shopify require a white background for product photos?
No. Unlike Amazon's main-image rule, Shopify doesn't enforce a specific background color. A neutral, consistent background across a product's photo set is a widely followed seller convention, not a Shopify platform requirement.
How many photos should I upload for each Shopify product?
Shopify's own technical limit is generous — up to 250 images, videos, or 3D models per product — so it isn't a real constraint. The practical seller convention is closer to 5 to 8 images per product; see our guide to how many product photos you need for the reasoning platform by platform.
How long can a product video be on a Shopify listing?
Shopify's own help documentation caps a product video at 60 seconds, 1GB in file size, up to 4K resolution, in MP4 or MOV format. Longer videos need to be hosted on YouTube or Vimeo and embedded instead.
Can ShopShot create a product video for my Shopify listing?
Yes, on two packages. The Photos + Video package adds a 5-second video, and the Launch Pack adds a 10-second video, both generated from the same product photo you upload for your images. Either fits comfortably within Shopify's 60-second video limit.
