White background vs. transparent background: which does your marketplace actually need?

White background vs. transparent background is a question that trips up a lot of sellers, because the two terms sound interchangeable and aren't. The right choice depends on where you're selling, not on which one sounds more "professional." This guide covers what each term actually means, which marketplaces require a literal white background, and the real-world gotchas that come up with transparent PNGs.

This guide is about the decision between the two, not pixel dimensions (see our product photo size requirements guide for that) and not Amazon alone (see our Amazon main image white background guide for Amazon's rule in full).

White background vs. transparent background: what the terms actually mean

A white background photo is an ordinary image, a JPG or an opaque PNG, where the area around the product is filled in with white pixels. Open it anywhere and it looks the same: a product on a white backdrop. A transparent background photo is a PNG file with an alpha channel, meaning the area around the product isn't filled with any color at all. Open it in an editor and you'll typically see a gray-and-white checkerboard pattern where the background would be. What actually displays behind the product depends entirely on whatever the transparent file is placed on top of, a web page, a slide, another image. A transparent PNG isn't a style choice the way a white background is; it's a file format property, and what a shopper or platform does with that empty space varies.

Which marketplaces require a literal white background

Amazon is the clearest case: its main image rule calls for a pure white background, specified as an exact RGB value of 255, 255, 255, not an off-white or cream. That rule applies to the main image only, not every photo in the listing. We cover the full requirement, including frame fill and what's not allowed, in our Amazon main image white background guide.

Walmart Marketplace sets a similar rule for its primary image: a seamless, pure white background with the product filling at least 50% of the frame, which we cover in our product photo size requirements guide. Neither Amazon nor Walmart asks for a transparent file for these images; both want an actual white backdrop baked into the photo.

The real-world gotchas with transparent PNGs

Outside of a main-image rule, a transparent PNG can behave unpredictably depending on where it ends up, and this is worth knowing before you build a photo set around transparent files:

Neither of these is an official, documented platform policy the way Amazon's and Walmart's white-background rules are. They're patterns reported by Etsy's own help content and by sellers in Shopify's community, which is exactly why a plain white (or otherwise opaque) background tends to be the safer default when you're not sure how a transparent file will render somewhere.

What ShopShot Studio actually delivers

To be direct about this: ShopShot generates styled scene photos, not plain isolated cutouts with a transparent background. Every image comes back as a finished photo in one of our looks, Moody still life, Clean studio, Editorial, Lifestyle, Floating luxury, Studio float, Sculptural interior, Dramatic hero, or On a model, each with its own background baked into the image. None of these is a transparent-cutout PNG. If what you specifically need is a true transparent-background cutout file, for example to drop your product into your own design or composite it yourself, that's not what this service produces.

What we do produce works well anywhere a real background (white or otherwise) is expected: Amazon secondary images, Etsy and Shopify listings, ads, and social posts. For an Amazon or Walmart main image specifically, choose the Clean studio style and mention "pure white background" in the order form's notes field so it's clear what you need. We check every image against your original photo before delivery, and you get one free redo if something doesn't match.

So which do you actually need?

Questions

Does ShopShot Studio deliver transparent background photos?

No. ShopShot generates styled scene photos, like Clean studio, Moody still life, or Floating luxury, not a plain isolated cutout with a transparent background. If what you actually need is a true transparent PNG cutout file, that's not what this service produces.

Does Amazon require a white background?

Yes, for the main image only. Amazon's own seller documentation calls for a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255) on the main image specifically; secondary images can use other backgrounds. See our guide to Amazon's main image white background rule for the full requirement.

Will a transparent PNG cause problems on Etsy?

It can. Etsy's own help content lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC as accepted file types, and separately notes that a transparent PNG uploaded to a listing can show with a black background in place of the transparency, rather than displaying as transparent.

Will a transparent PNG cause problems on Shopify?

Possibly, depending on your theme. Shopify doesn't document this as an official rule, but merchant threads on Shopify's own Community forum report transparent PNGs sometimes rendering with an unexpected white box behind the product, depending on how the theme handles transparency.

Which ShopShot style works best for a plain white background?

Clean studio, described as a bright, simple background for shop listings. Mention "pure white background" in the order form's notes field so it's clear what you need.
