AI photo disclosure rules by platform: Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and TikTok Shop

If you list on more than one marketplace, AI photo disclosure rules by platform aren't the same from one to the next, and mixing them up is an easy way to miss a requirement. Here's what Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and TikTok Shop each actually say about AI-generated or AI-edited product photos, side by side, and how ShopShot fits into each.

The short answer, platform by platform

Etsy's AI photo disclosure rule

Etsy's rule is the most explicit of the four: if AI tools meaningfully shaped what a buyer sees in the photo, description, or the product itself, Etsy expects a disclosure in the listing, plus a "Designed by" attribution instead of "Made by." That applies even when the product itself is handmade but the photo was AI-generated. See our full guide to Etsy's AI photo disclosure rule for the checklist and details.

Amazon's rule is narrower than a general AI-photo disclosure

Amazon doesn't publish a rule saying every AI-generated product photo needs a disclosure. What it does require, as of mid-2026, is a metadata tag on images or A+ Content specifically when they contain a photorealistic person created entirely by AI, not based on a real person. That requirement followed a New York state law on synthetic-performer disclosure and doesn't apply to AI-generated backgrounds, scenes, or product shots that don't include a synthetic person. Separately, Amazon's main image has its own strict, unrelated rule about background and format; see our guide to Amazon's main image requirements. If you're not sure whether a specific photo counts as a photorealistic AI person, Amazon's own seller documentation is the source to check before you publish, since this is a newer requirement.

eBay: no published AI photo disclosure requirement

eBay allows AI-generated and AI-edited listing photos, and its own listing tools offer AI-generated background options. But eBay's public Images, videos and text policy and Picture requirements don't currently instruct sellers to add an AI disclosure or label to a photo. The rule that does apply is the same one that applies to any photo on eBay: it has to accurately represent the item, and for used, damaged, or collectible goods, eBay expects real photos of the actual item rather than stock or generated substitutes. eBay's User Agreement also places responsibility on the seller for any content, including AI-generated content, added to a listing. Because eBay hasn't published a specific disclosure rule the way Etsy and TikTok Shop have, treat this as no current requirement rather than a fixed policy, and recheck before you publish since marketplace AI rules are still changing.

TikTok Shop's AI photo disclosure rule

TikTok Shop's Seller Center publishes its own AI-content policy: AI-assisted edits like background cleanup or color correction don't need a label, but AI-generated content that creates or substantially changes what's shown, like a new scene or model, does. See our full guide to TikTok Shop's AI photo rules, which also covers TikTok's separate image-quality tiers.

Where ShopShot fits

ShopShot Studio turns one real photo of your product into AI-generated photos styled for your shop, starting at $15 and delivered within 1 business day. Every image starts from your own product photo, and we check the result against that photo before delivery, with one free redo if something doesn't match.

ShopShot doesn't file any platform's disclosure or turn on a label for you, because each marketplace's disclosure setting lives inside your own listing, not in the photo file itself. Whichever platforms you sell on, labeling the listing correctly, and checking that platform's current policy before you publish, stays a step you complete yourself at upload.

Questions

Which platforms actually require an AI photo disclosure?

Etsy and TikTok Shop both publish a general disclosure requirement for AI-generated content. Amazon's requirement is narrower: it only covers photorealistic AI-generated people, not product photos in general. eBay hasn't published a disclosure requirement for AI-edited or AI-generated listing photos.

Does Amazon require AI photo disclosure like Etsy and TikTok Shop do?

Not the same kind. Amazon doesn't have a general rule requiring sellers to disclose that a product photo is AI-generated. As of mid-2026 it does require a specific metadata tag on images or A+ Content that show a photorealistic AI-generated person, tied to a New York state disclosure law.

Does eBay require sellers to disclose AI-generated product photos?

eBay's published picture and content policies don't currently instruct sellers to label AI-generated or AI-edited photos. eBay still requires every photo to accurately represent the item, and its User Agreement holds sellers responsible for AI-generated content they add to a listing.

If I sell on more than one platform, do I need to disclose AI photos everywhere?

Check each platform separately, since the rules aren't the same. Disclose on Etsy and TikTok Shop when AI meaningfully created or changed what's shown. Watch for Amazon's narrower synthetic-people tag if a photo includes an AI-generated person. eBay and Amazon don't currently ask for a general AI-photo label, but when you're unsure, disclosing anyway is the safer default.
