Amazon's main image requirements: the pure white background rule, explained

If you sell on Amazon, the platform's main image requirements are strict about one thing in particular: a pure white background. Here's what that rule actually covers, why listings get suppressed over it, and how to approach getting a compliant main image.

What Amazon's main image requirements actually say

Amazon's own seller documentation says the main image for a listing must show only the product for sale on a pure white background — specified as an exact RGB value of 255, 255, 255, not an off-white, cream, or light gray. The product should fill most of the frame, with sellers commonly told to aim for around 85% coverage so the item reads clearly in search results and thumbnails. The main image also can't include added text, logos, watermarks, borders, color blocks, or other graphics, and it needs to be an actual photograph of the real product being sold, not an illustration, mockup, or placeholder.

Secondary images (the other photos in a listing) have more freedom — lifestyle shots, angled views, and non-white backgrounds are allowed there. The pure white background rule is specifically about the main image.

Why it matters: listing suppression

Amazon checks main images against these rules, and a main image that doesn't meet them can get a listing suppressed from search, meaning it stops showing up to buyers until it's fixed. This is separate from the general rule ShopShot already notes elsewhere on this site: Amazon requires images to accurately represent the product, on top of the main image's white-background requirement.
