Product photo size requirements: pixel dimensions for Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon

Product photo size requirements are different on every marketplace, and mixing them up is an easy way to end up with a blurry thumbnail or a failed upload. Here's what Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon actually publish about minimum and recommended pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, and file-size limits, sourced from each platform's own guidance rather than guesswork.

Product photo size requirements at a glance

• Etsy: at least 2000 x 2000px recommended; at least 635 x 635px minimum for your first photo; keep files under roughly 1MB so they upload reliably.
• Shopify: 2048 x 2048px recommended for square images; 800 x 800px minimum for zoom to work; up to 5000 x 5000px and 20MB accepted.
• Amazon: 1000px on the longest side is the commonly cited minimum for zoom; 1600px or more is commonly recommended; 10MB file-size cap.

Etsy's photo dimensions and file-size guidance

Etsy's help center article "Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop" recommends listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels. Your first (primary) listing photo has its own, lower floor: Etsy says it should be at least 635 pixels wide and tall, and that photos smaller than that can show up lower in search results. Etsy also notes that images larger than about 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower connection, so bigger isn't always better if it costs you a failed upload. Etsy's accepted file types are JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC; transparent PNGs aren't supported and will show as black. Etsy's own guidance also says your first photo should be landscape or square orientation, not portrait, so the thumbnail crop keeps your product centered.

Shopify's recommended product image dimensions

Shopify's own image guidance recommends 2048 x 2048 pixels for a square (1:1) product photo, which is the ratio Shopify's product pages are built around. For the built-in zoom feature to activate, Shopify recommends at least 800 x 800 pixels; below that, zoom won't kick in. If you're using a rectangular image instead of square, Shopify's guidance scales the same way — roughly 800px on the short side as a working minimum, up to about 2048px on the long side as a practical recommended maximum. Shopify's upload limits are more generous than its recommendation: it accepts images up to 5000 x 5000 pixels, capped at 20MB per file.

Amazon's image size and file-size rules

Amazon keeps its full, current image-requirements page behind Seller Central login, so treat the numbers below as what Amazon's public help content and outside sellers consistently describe, not a verbatim quote. The number that matters most: 1000 pixels on an image's longest side is the widely cited minimum, because that's the threshold that turns on Amazon's zoom feature for shoppers. Sellers and image-prep guides commonly recommend going higher, in the 1600px-and-up range, with images somewhere between 2000 and 3000 pixels on the longest side described as a comfortable middle ground rather than a hard requirement. Amazon's file-size cap is commonly cited at 10MB per image, and accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and non-animated GIF.
